GES Announces 2026/2027 Academic Calendar and SHS Reporting Date

Fresh students going to Senior High School and technical institutions will start their academic journey on September 18, 2026. This marks the second year running that the revised pre-tertiary academic calendar has been in use. This is a sign that Ghana's education system is back on track.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) wants every student who sat for this year's BECE to keep calm. According to the service, everything is in place to welcome them into the next chapter of their education. GES Director General also added that no qualifying student will be left without a school.
GES spokesperson and Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, said : if you qualified, you' will get a placement. The service says it has already set everything in motion to make second-cycle education accessible to every eligible student across Ghana.
The September return is also symbolic . It is the second consecutive year SHS students are resuming in September. A clear indication that there is a return to the pre-COVID academic calendar that many Ghanaians knew about.
GES Clarifies Numbers
You may have seen headlines suggesting that close to 72,000 students could miss out on SHS placement. The GES is calling that out as simply not true.
The service says the country's schools and infrastructure are well-equipped to take in all qualified students. GES encourages the public not to panic over what it describes as misleading media reports or fake news.
On the subject of the double-track system, GES management clarified that the gradual process of phasing it out won't close any doors for students. If anything, they say it's meant to improve the quality of teaching and learning not reduce access.

For basic schools from kindergarten through JHS here's how the 2026/2027 school year is structured:
September 8 – December 17, 2026
Mid-term break: November 5–6
December 18, 2026 – January 4, 2027
January 5 – March 25, 2027
March 26 – April 19, 2027
April 20 – July 22, 2027
2027 BECE Dates
Students and parents preparing for the 2027 BECE should mark their calendars: the exams are scheduled to run from May 5 to May 12, 2027.
